Work placements
A little snippet in the Graduate section of the Guardian at the weekend (p. 27, 14th October, 2006) gave tips on how to put together a diary of a work placement: keep a detailed record including a simple log of impressions, reflections, high and low points ... make at least one diary entry a week, check out any report requirements from your institution / department. Useful sources of information:
National Council for Work Experience including a
downloadable student guide, a
leaflet looking at why it's worth doing a work placement and
general work placement information.
University resources include the
careers service pages and the
Equipe project site.
Last week's WORK in the Guardian included a
profile of Mike Glover, the civil engineer in charge of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link and a link to a guide on
how to make the most of your placement. A little fashion / media focused but some useful tips nonetheless, e.g. "don't take shortcuts when asked to do something a specific way, don't be rude under any circumstances - the office grapevine can stretch quite far, quite quickly - and don't try to be best friends with your boss, it makes life less complicated. ... be willing to do more than your job spec, suggest new ways of doing things, although only "after considered thought and with sufficient humility". And put your mobile phone on silent - a Crazy Frog ringtone could undo a lot of good work."
