Technology, teaching and learning
Several things of interest today:
ALT members are blogging from the Educause ELI conference in the US, see
http://conference-weblog.alt.ac.uk/eli2007/There are a couple of interesting links out of their Blog to:
- TLT group evaluation of campus-based technology adoption: "Factors Affecting the Adoption of Faculty-Developed Academic Software: A Study of Five iCampus Projects" which will be of interest to those involved in the evaluation of e-learning and technology tools produced in the engCETL and its predecessor, the EEC, also those looking at the adoption of a new VLE at this institution.
- The Horizon Report , an annual research oriented report that "that seeks to identify and describe emerging technologies likely to have a large impact on teaching, learning, or creative expression within higher education". It indicates that technologies such as "User-Created Content" and "Social Networking" are imminent in their widespread adoption and chimes with work being done here to provide a social networking tool for academics wishing to share teaching and learning practice. This arose out of work on the Rights and Rewards JISC funded project that looked at academics' attitudes to sharing teaching and learning resources via a an instiutional repository among other things.
There was also a mention about "Second Life" discussions at Davos on the Today programme today. Arianna Huffington was mentioned and there's this interesting
interview with her at Davos on the Reuters Second Life site.
This also links with a paper presented at the "
Challenging the Orthodoxies" conference before Christmas:
Land, R., Bayne, S., & Hemmi, A. (2006). Researching the digital: virtual ethnography and new learning spaces. Paper presented at the Challenging the Orthodoxies: alternative approaches to educational research. Retrieved 25th January, 2007, from http://www.mdx.ac.uk/aboutus/fpr/clqe/events.asp.
Globalisation
The new "
academy exchange" has internationalisation as its theme and the Guardian
work section had an
article about the impact of language skills on the global job prospects of graduates.
