Applications to universities surge According to an article in the Times Higher Education Supplement (16th February 2007, pp.4-5). What is particularly interesting for engCETL related departments is that much of this surge is in sciences, maths and engineering.
The figures are based on the number of applications received by UCAS as of January 15th 2007 and the comparison has been done with applications received by that time last year. The other interesting point is that "most of the increases are concentrated in English pre-1992 universities":

Number of applications
% change
Design studies 37,140 10.70
Mechanical engineering 22,835 9.80
Civil engineering 18,605 13.00
Electronic and electrical engineering 16,697 0.20
Aerospace engineering 9,572 3.00
General engineering 8,238 8.00
Chemical, process and energy engineering 7,378 16.80
