Greetings from Finland and other stuff
Currently enjoying the land of the midnight sun up in Rovaniemi in Sumi Finnish Lapland (it's 20 to 11 and still light!). This year's ISATT conference is being held inside the Artic Circle. Some of our number are staying in the Santa Claus Hotel and we're promised a face-to-face with the bearded one along with lots of comradely culture and thought provoking papers. The pre-conference, aimed at doctoral students, begins tomorrow and the main conference on Tuesday (take a look at
the official site for more).
Among other things that have happened recently are that the University has decided to keep me on in the role of Continuing Professional Development programme manager, so I won't be destitute, but trying to work out how comfortable I feel about the whole thing: it's an academic post within Human Resources with only one other collegue from our old unit for morale support. As we'll be working in a very different environment I guess we're going to have some interesting cultural and academic conversations and what has happened to the rest of my old colleagues has left a nasty taste in my mouth. Talking to others working in Academic Development it seems that our units are often fair game for cut backs. Ironic when you think elsewhere they are seting up new units!
The ELATE workshops went well and Harry's workshop was particularly well attended (30+), while Karen enlivened the post-prandial session. In the rest of the event teaching awards were handed out, screens were watched and a good lunch was had by all!
